Single-line sailboat on the inner ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a simple sailboat outline with a tall mast, a triangular front sail and three curved sails behind it, resting on a thin curved hull. The linework is a uniform black outline with no shading, giving a minimal, graphic look. The close crop shows the ankle and a little of the surrounding skin against a soft, slightly warm background.

Now listen, because the boat in this tale is older than the kingdom that built it, and the kingdom was only ever a rumour told by fishermen to their children. The harbour master of Vell had one daughter, Ysolde, who would not stay ashore. Every morning she climbed the seawall with a pencil stub and a scrap of tarred canvas, and every morning she drew the same sloop: one tall mast like a heron's leg, one sail pointed as a wren's beak, and three more sails bellied out behind like the curve of a held breath. She drew it with a single line, she said, because a boat that is only one line can always be pushed out to sea.

Her father laughed until the autumn gales came. Then the sea took the lower quay, the fish-sheds, and the bell from the chapel, and the people of Vell gathered in the square to decide who would be sent to beg at the neighbouring towns. Ysolde went down to the water with her scrap of canvas and saw that the tide had left a sloop stranded on the mud, exactly as she had drawn it, hull curved thin as a fingernail. Nobody had built it. Nobody had seen it arrive.

She pushed it out with her shoulder. It floated. The three back sails filled without a word from anyone, and it went north into the fog, and the people of Vell still say that if you stand on the seawall at first light you can see one line of black on the horizon, and that it is always, always going home.
