Crescent moon and star emblem on the nape

Neck · Colour · Photo

A round emblem with a gold five-pointed star and a crescent moon sits on pink fill, with a red, green and blue gem on the design. Teal ribbon-like swirls wrap around the left and right sides of the emblem. The bold black outlines and soft shading give the piece a clean, illustrated look, and the tattoo is centred on the skin of the upper back and nape.

Nobody stops at the Cold Spring fuel stop after midnight unless they are lost or running, and the woman who came in that Thursday was both. She had dust to her knees and a canvas bag that clanked when she set it down. I was counting the till, not looking at her, when she put a round thing on the counter beside the lottery tickets. It was a little shield, pink as the inside of a shell, with a gold star standing in the middle and a moon cupped inside it like something it was keeping warm.

"That's worth more than a tank of diesel," I said. "Possibly two."

She said it was not for sale. It was for the road, she said, and I would know when to use it. Then she paid for a bottle of water with a note so old the printing had worn off the corners, and walked out into the blue dark.

After that the wind came off the flats and would not settle. It curled round the pumps in long teal ribbons that caught the sodium light and dropped their glitter on the forecourt. A lorry driver swore he saw a girl in a sailor's collar standing on the central reservation, waving him on. Then a tyre blew on the Ridge Road, the wind dragged a sheet of dust across the dark, and the signal bars died one by one, and I thought that was the end of it.

At dawn the shield was still on the counter where she had left it, the gold star pointing due east along the empty road. I could not say why I picked it up. I only know I locked the till, left the sign on the door, and drove out after the light.
