Crescent moon, cat and flowers on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A black cat sits on the lower tip of a crescent moon with a smiling face, with three five-pointed stars to the right and a flower with leaves below. The linework is bold and solid, with grey shading on the moon face, cat fur and leaves. The design is in black and grey only, centred on the calf and framed by a plain, pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat turned up the same night the tyre blew on the Buick, and it sat on the cattle grid outside the fuel shack as if it had paid for the spot. I was counting change into a sweaty palm when I noticed it had its back to the highway and its face tipped up, watching the moon over the Calico Hills like it had money riding on the outcome.

The moon was a thin old crescent that night, hung low and sharp enough to cut the sky. Dad had painted a grinning face on the sign when he still had the knees for a ladder, and that face had cheered every lorry driver through since 1968. Nobody ever asked why the cat chose the lower tip of the crescent to perch on. Mr Ottery, who rebuilt carburettors in the back bay, said the moon was lonely and cats kept lonely things company. He said it after his second bottle of Dr Pepper, so I didn't take it as gospel.

Around three the wind dropped and the stars came out sharp as tacks. The moon man seemed to wink, though Dad always swore the paint was just flaking. The cat stretched, yawned at the Buick's owner snoring in his seat, and leapt down onto the sand with no more fuss than a shop bell. It walked off towards the mesa with its tail straight up, and I watched until the dark swallowed it.

At dawn there was a smudge of black fur caught on the sign's bottom edge, right where the moon's horn touched the paint. I left it there. Some things are better kept than explained.
