Crescent moon with face and black cat on an arm
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon with a smiling human face in profile curves down the left side of the image, with a black cat sitting upright on its lower edge and looking up to the right. The moon is shaded with stippled dots, while the cat is solid black with grey highlights along its body and tail. The tattoo sits on a pale arm against a dark background, with the cat and moon filling most of the frame.

By the third week of the frost the moon over Veyle had gone so thin the lamplighters refused to climb for it. Captain Hobb sent me up the bell tower anyway, because I was the youngest and my knees had not yet learned to complain. From the top I could see the whole crescent hanging above the river, its face turned sideways as if listening for someone on the far bank.

The cat was already there. Nobody in Veyle owned her. She belonged to the granary, and the granary belonged to the mice, which made her the only honest officer in the kingdom. She sat on the lower curve of the moon as though it were a window ledge, tail hanging down over the rooftops, watching the face with the patience cats keep for people who owe them money.
"You've come to take the light back," the moon said, not unkindly. Its voice was like wet paper. I told it the king wanted the lamps kept lit through the frost and that I had no ladder long enough. The cat yawned. The moon sighed and tipped toward the river, and a thread of silver slid down the tower and into my lantern, cold as a coin.
I climbed down with the light and found the lamp burning blue. Captain Hobb asked what I had seen. I said only that the moon had been arguing with a cat, and that the cat had won. He did not write it in the ledger. Every night since, I have left a saucer of milk on the tower step, and every morning it is empty, and every night the moon is a little thicker than the night before.
