Crescent moon outline on the nape

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon is drawn as a single thin outline at the base of the neck, with the hair pulled up and away from the skin. The linework is fine and even, and the ink reads as a soft blue-grey with no shading inside the shape. The composition is a close back view with the tattoo centred in the upper frame, and the rest of the frame is plain skin with a white lace bra strap at the edges.

You learn the stairs of Carrick Hold in the dark, counting them because the steward swears the number changes if you look away. Nineteen up to the arrow slit in the north wall, where the stone is worn smooth by hands that wanted the same view. Nobody has roofed the keep since the siege, so the sky is your ceiling and the rain keeps the floor black and shining.

Tonight the moon is only a sliver, and you trace it on the sill with a wet thumb the way your mother traced the letters of your name on a fogged window. The masons who cut the crescent above the gate used a single chisel and never filled the groove, so the lord's men could never agree whether the moon was carved or simply missing. The first lord paid the masons in silver. The second paid them in silence, and the stone has been quiet ever since.

In October you find a second crescent scratched beside the first, the lines still pale and gritty. Someone else has been climbing. You stand on the sill with your heels over the drop and wait, and the wind carries up tallow smoke and wet wool from the bailey, and a voice calls your name softly from the gatehouse, the way it did before the gate was barred.

You answer. Below, a lamp swings, and whoever holds it has been drawing the moon too, a little lower each night, closing the gap between your marks. When the two outlines finally meet on the stone, the circle they make is the first full moon Carrick Hold has seen since the lord locked the gate.
