Crescent moon on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon is tattooed on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck, with the hair tied up above it. The moon is outlined in dark ink with loose, sketch-like linework and light grey shading along the inner curve. The photograph is taken from behind in dim light, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame against plain skin.

Just after three, the corridor lights on Ward Seven dimmed to their amber setting, and Ruth Calloway stood at the sluice sink with her sleeves pushed up, waiting for the kettle to finish its argument with the tap. Mr Dhillon in bed four had been asking for the moon since midnight. Nobody had told him there was no window on that side of the ward, only a strip of frosted glass above the notice board where the sky came through grey.

She took a biro from her pocket and, on the back of a blank drug chart, drew him one. Two curves, a thin sickle, the inner edge left loose so it looked as though it had been done in a hurry. She had learned the shape from her father, who had drawn them in the margins of her school jotters every term when she was small, saying a moon was only a shadow that had decided to be tidy. She carried the chart down to bed four and held it up where he could see, and he squinted at it the way people squint at handwriting they can't quite read.
"That's not very good," he said, and then he smiled, and she watched him fall asleep with one finger resting on the paper.
The shift ended at seven. On the walk to the bus stop the sky over the car park had gone the colour of weak tea, and a real moon, thin and pale, hung low above the multi-storey as if someone had clipped it there. Ruth stood under it a moment longer than she needed to, then went home to sleep through the morning.
