Ornate crescent moon on the nape of the neck

Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A crescent moon sits on the back of a person's neck, shown from behind with hair falling above it and a yellow top below. The inner curve is filled with fine geometric patterns, including scallops, lines and small circular motifs, while the outer edge is drawn with a bold solid line. The ink is a single dark tone, and the small dots near the tips of the crescent add a delicate finishing detail against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon had been a thin paring for three nights, and Hanne Vos did not trust a thin moon to tell the truth about the sea. She sat on the hatch of the Marigold with the chronometer wrapped in its flannel beside her and the tally book open on her knee, marking the bearing of the horn of light each time the clouds opened.

Below, the cook was singing something in Portuguese about a fisherman's daughter, badly, and the second mate had given up telling him to stop. Hanne had learned the sky from her father, who had learned it from a Dutch chart now too brittle to unfold. He used to say the crescent was the only honest part of the heavens, because it showed you which way it had been looking.

On the fourth night the cloud thinned and the horn pointed straight down at the water like a finger. She took the sight, then the second, then sat with the numbers until the ink ran where her thumb had smudged it. The little cluster of stars she had noted near the lower tip was not where the almanac said it should be, and she understood that the almanac was wrong, not the sea.

She went below and woke the captain, who listened with his eyes shut and said only, "Then we turn north, Miss Vos, and I will write in the log that you were right." By dawn the Marigold had her new course, and Hanne slept with the tally book under her cheek, the moon still pale over the rail, keeping its own counsel.
