Small crescent moon behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon sits on the skin behind the ear, with the upper edge outlined in crisp black lines. The lower curve is filled with fine dots and soft grey shading that gives the moon some depth. The tattoo is shown in close crop against dark hair and pale skin, with plenty of empty space around it.

The almanac said the moon would be a thin paring over Cromer on the Thursday, but my father never trusted anything printed by men who had not stood on a jetty in February. He kept his own book instead, a black oilcloth notebook on the windowsill of the lifeboat shed, and every night he drew the moon as he saw it, with a hard pencil for the edge and a blunt one for the shadowed side, where he stippled tiny dots until the paper went grey as a gull's back.

I was nine the winter he let me hold the pencil. He showed me how the lit edge stayed sharp and the dark half had to be built up slowly, dot by dot, so it looked as though it was still deciding whether to show itself. "The shadow does the work," he said, and then the lamp at the end of the pier swung round, and he went quiet and counted the seconds between flashes under his breath.
The Thursday came and the paring was there, just as the almanac promised, and he was not there to see it. The sea took the cutter in the night, and the notebook came home to me in a carrier bag with a ferry timetable folded inside. I opened it at the last page, where he had drawn the moon with its lower curve so heavily dotted that the paper had nearly worn through.
I still keep it on the sill. Each evening I draw one moon beside his, and I leave the shadow for the dots to finish, because he always said the dark part is the bit that keeps the light honest. Some nights the sky is clear, and some nights I simply count the flashes from the pier and trust that he is still doing the counting too.
