The last fare of the night leaves a feather on the back seat of your cab, wedged into the crease where the vinyl has split. It is longer than your hand, navy along the quill and fanned out at the top, and when you hold it under the sodium lamp outside the Rialto the eye at its centre catches the light like something wet. Teal, then a ring of butter yellow, then orange, then a dark blue heart that sits a little too deep to be painted.

You know the fare, or you think you do. Silver coat, a laugh that carried from the kerb on Canal Street, a voice on the phone that said Nine Elms and then changed its mind at the bridge. You drove him past the shuttered florists and the chip shop with its hatch half up. Nobody wears a peacock feather to a bar on a Tuesday, so you tuck it behind the sun visor and tell yourself you'll drop it at lost property in the morning.
By two the rain has started, and the wipers keep time with the meter. A text arrives from a number you don't recognise: Keep it. The eye is the only part that ever decided anything. You pull into a bay outside the bus garage, switch off the engine, and take the feather down again. In the orange glow from the depot windows the heart at its centre seems to be the one thing in the city that is still awake.
