Crescent moon with lotus and drops
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a crescent moon filled with delicate mandala-like patterns and dotted detail. The design is drawn in fine black linework on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

Brother Tenzin had been told the moon would be the only lamp needed for the night office, and for forty winters he had trusted it more than the monks who said so. Tonight the cloud sat low over the pass and the lantern on the gate tower had gone out twice already. He climbed with the oil can under his arm, counting the steps the way his teacher had taught him, one bead of the rosary for each.

At the top the wind came off the snow and found every gap in his robe. He set the can down beside the copper bell and looked for the moon, which showed only as a thin pale edge behind the cloud, a crescent drawn in the sky by someone with a very fine pen. Its lace of shadow seemed to hang loose at the rim. Below, in the courtyard, the lotus pond held a skin of ice, and in the middle of it a single flower the novices had planted in summer was closing for the night.
He filled the lamp, trimmed the wick with his thumbnail and lit it. The light was small and yellow and made the cloud look thicker. He thought of the abbot who had told him that the moon is only ever half lit, and that a monk should not mind the dark half, since it is still the moon. He had not understood this at twenty. He was not sure he understood it now, but his hands kept doing the work.
When the bell struck for matins he heard meltwater drip from the eaves onto the iron rail, one drop after another, like beads being slipped along a cord. He counted them until the office was finished. Then the cloud tore open, and the crescent stood above the pass, clean and sharp, and for a moment the whole valley was lit with its cold silver.
