Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical line drawing built around overlapping circles in the seed of life pattern, surrounded by scrolled swirls and layered petal-like points. A sunburst rises from the top and a row of dots and diamond-shaped drops hangs from the base. The linework is uniform and black on a plain white background, with no shading and no body part shown.

Her son Tam went out to the rock the winter the oil ran short. He found the lamp dark and the stair full of wet feathers, and he sat down on the top step to wait for the weather to break. Below him the lens hung in its cage like a dome of glass rings, each circle folding into the next, and when he struck a match the rings threw back a hundred small suns across the walls.
He stayed three nights. On the third he noticed that the drops of glass hanging from the lens rim caught the match flame in a different order every time he moved his head, and that if he counted them from the bottom they made the same pattern as the petals on the brass plate his mother kept under the stair. He told himself it was only the cold. He lit the wick with the last of the oil and turned the crank by hand.
The beam went out across the grey water in a fan of rays, and far off a boat turned for home. The keeper's wife said nothing when Tam came down. She only polished the lens again, and this time she polished the rings from the centre outward, the way the pattern had been drawn, so that the light would always find its way back.
