Lily, spiderweb and hanging spider design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a lily-like flower with curling tendrils at the top, a spider hanging on a thread from the upper left, and a spiderweb filling the lower section of a large crescent shape. Small open circles line the lower left edge of the crescent. The design uses bold, even black outlines with light pencil shading in the web and the petals, and it has no colour.

The flour sack had been the cook's pride for a month, so when the spider walked out of it on the thirty-first night out from Port Averil, Tobias Renn held the lantern up and would not let anyone sweep her overboard. 'She's the only one aboard who knows where the wind is coming from,' he said, and that was the end of it.

The crew called her Mab. She spun her web in the angle between the mainmast and the fore-yard, where the rigging ran into the dark, and each evening she let a single thread down from the crow's nest toward the water, fine as a hair and bright with salt. The bosun swore it pulled taut when the weather was turning. Nobody liked to test it. Ship's boy Kit, who was nine and reckless, once climbed out along it to see where it ended, and came back with his palms bloody and a pale lily bloom crushed in his fist, the kind that grows only on the rocks off the Cape of Sorrows, where no boat has landed in living memory.
The storm came on the thirty-third night, a black thing with no edges. The compass spun. The lamps went out one by one. Mab's thread glowed faintly in the spray, and Kit, who had seen where it went, lashed himself to the foremast and followed it with his eyes until the ship turned after it. The thread ran north-east through the fog to a crescent of rock where a single white lily stood open in the gale, and the ship came in on the lee of it like a hand closing.
They anchored in the morning. The lily was gone by noon, but the web was still strung across the cove, glittering with dew, and Mab was sitting in the middle of it.
