Crescent moon with mandala and triangle border
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A crescent moon in black outline on a white background, with a band of triangles along its outer edge and a row of mandala-style medallions inside the curve. Small diamond shapes sit around the moon as accents. The linework is fine and even, with solid black fills in the triangles and open line detail in the medallions, and the design is composed symmetrically along the crescent.

Dear Ada,

The fair pulled into Haverlow on Tuesday in the rain, and the Moon Tent went up before the Wheel did, because Mr Pascoe insists the moon must be the first thing a customer sees. You will laugh, but it is the same crescent you helped me cut in the spring, with the triangle teeth along its rim. Pascoe had the old lantern frame re-hung, and there it sits, nine feet of painted board over the entrance, with the brass medallions riveted inside the curve where the lamplight comes through.
The trouble began with the count. Pascoe says there should be seven medallions, one for each night the fair is open, but I counted six on the first evening and five on the second. The fifth had gone from the lower horn, and the gap sat there like a bitten biscuit. Nobody will admit to touching it. The palm reader in the next booth swears the moon takes what it likes, which is the sort of thing she says when she wants a sixpence.
I went looking with a torch after the last show. Under the stage boards, tangled in a coil of wire, I found it, pierced with the same tiny petals you taught me to draw. Beside it lay a folded scrap in a hand I did not know: Keep the balance. Put it back where the light falls. So at dawn I fixed it in place with a hammer and two rivets, and when I stepped back the crescent was whole again, true on both sides.
Write soon and tell me whether your father ever finished that orrery. I am sleeping in the van now with the moon through the back window, and I count the medallions before I shut my eyes.
