Crescent moon with mandala and lotus design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a crescent moon, with its outer curve filled with fine mandala-like patterns, scrolling leaves and a lotus flower at the upper left. A large rosette and a leaf cluster sit at the lower left, and a vertical ornamental line with arrow-shaped tips runs down from the top and bottom of the design. The linework is fine and detailed with stippled shading, set against a plain white background.

The pattern card had been punched by someone who hated mornings, and Iris Dacre spent the first hour of the night shift tracing each hole with a fingernail to learn where the moon was meant to fall. Outside the Radford mill the gas lamps hissed, and the Leavers machines below began their long clatter, shaking the floorboards until her teacup walked across the bench.

Mr Tolley, the overseer, leaned over her shoulder with his pipe unlit. "Crescent's wrong," he said. "Customers want a full moon for the front room, something to look at while they take their tea." She said nothing. The card had come up from the drawing office with a crescent pencilled in a hand she knew, Walter's, who had gone to Flanders and not come back. She had kept his lotus and his rosette and the leaves that curled as if they were listening, and she had left the middle blank, the way he always had.
When the curtain came off the frame at dawn, the lace was pale as frost. Tolley held it to the window and grumbled that the centre looked like a hole. Iris took it from him, folded it along the crescent's edge, and told him the hole was where the light went. He boxed it anyway for a shop in Nottingham that sold to people with money.
Three weeks later she walked past that shop on her half day. The curtain hung in the window with its black pattern thrown back by the lamp, and through the open centre a bare bulb glowed, so that the whole pavement was lit by a moon Walter had drawn and she had finished.
