Crescent moon with mandala pattern
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A crescent moon outlined in black pen, with its thick band filled by mandala-style flowers, swirls and dotted ornament. Leaves and small dots trail along the upper tip and lower edge, and the centre of the moon is left blank white paper. Fine, even linework and stippled dots are drawn in black ink on white paper, with three black fineliner pens placed at the right edge of the frame.

The ewes had been lambing for three nights when Hannah Dunn went out to the top field with a lantern and found the moon lying in the snow by the gate. It was not whole. It was a crescent as thick as a man's forearm, its inside left bare, and its rim was all flowers and curling stems, the sort her gran had stitched around the collar of her good coat. The frost had gone hard on it, so Hannah knelt in the drift and breathed on the edge until the cold came off.

Her father had always said the moon was a wheel turning in the sky, and that when it stopped the farms would stop with it. He had never said what to do when it stopped in your own field. Hannah pulled off her gloves and began picking the ice from the petals one by one, the way she picked burrs from the dog. Under the frost the leaves were dark and dry. The dots along the lower edge were seeds, and she counted them to keep her hands busy: forty-one on the upper tip, eighty-three along the underside.
By dawn the lambs were up and bawling in the lean-to, and the moon had lifted a finger's width off the snow. Hannah could not feel her fingers. Her father found her asleep against the gate with the lantern gone out, and he carried her down the track while the moon followed them over the hedge, thin and cold and rimmed with flowers.
That night it rose whole again, but there was a hollow in its middle the size of a kneeling woman, and it stayed that way all winter. The Dunns still leave a lantern lit on the gate at the dark of the year, in case the moon comes down looking for somewhere to rest.
