Her son Tom had gone to the bank in Reading in March and had not written since the wedding notice arrived in the Gazette. She had kept the lamp burning in the kitchen window all the same. Ada climbed onto the wall and sat with her boots dangling, and the crescent hung above the church tower like a bent blade, its inner and outer edges speckled with tiny silver marks, as though some patient hand had stitched a border of seed pearls along it, one dot at a time.
She was looking at the moon so hard that she almost missed the blossom. The old pear she had grafted the year Tom was born had put out a single bloom in the cold, out of season, and it hung pale against the dark branches. Moths were already working the flowers, and one of them settled on her sleeve and sat there as if it had been waiting for her. Ada picked the blossom, tucked it behind her ear, and climbed down.
In the kitchen she poured a cup of milk, set it on the back step with a saucer over the top, and turned the lamp down low. Then she went up to bed and left the back door on the latch.
