Floral crescent moon design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a crescent moon packed with flowers, including a large open bloom, smaller blossoms and leafy sprigs. Fine linework and stippled dots shade the petals and form a dotted circle around the moon, with dangling drops, small stars and a tiny crescent hanging beneath. The design is drawn in black on a plain white background with no colour.

The moon over Calder Hythe never came whole for the three years I kept its orchard, and the lamplighters said that was my doing. They were wrong. A crescent only shows what the dark has left alone, and I was paid to coax things out of that thin silver edge: marigolds that opened at midnight, a fern that climbed the bell tower, the blue primrose my mother swore would not grow north of the salt marsh.

Each dusk I walked the dotted path the old queen had laid out, a ring of pebbles strung with dew that caught the first stars. Where the ring broke, I hung a glass drop from a cord so the moon could see its own reflection and know where to keep its shape. Mistress Oriel, who kept the ledgers, counted the drops every morning and never once found the same number twice, because the wind took some and the gulls took others.
The night the flower came, the big white bloom at the top of the crescent, I had been trying for a month to make it open. It opened at the hour the bells were rung for the drowned. I stood on the ladder with my hands full of seed and watched its petals turn toward a small silver crescent swinging beneath the stars, no bigger than a fingernail, and I understood that the moon had been planting me, not the other way round. I left the ladder where it stood and walked home without my wages, and I have not counted a drop since.
