Floral crescent tattoo designs on paper

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

Three separate sheets show crescent-shaped floral designs drawn in black pen on white paper. Each crescent is filled with leaves, daisies, small blossoms and curling stems, drawn with fine, even linework and light hatching. The designs are in black ink only, with the sheets placed at angles across the frame and a black pen resting at the top left.

The moon had been thin for three nights when Theon's daughter came up the stairs of the drawing-house with a bundle of papers under her arm, each one cut in the shape of a waning crescent. She set them on my table beside the reed pens and the pot of soot ink, and said her father wanted every edge filled with flowers before the new moon, or he would not pay for the lamp oil.

I worked through the first night with the shutter open. A crescent is a hard shape to fill, because the eye keeps following the curve and loses the leaves on the way round. So I began at the horns, where the arc narrows, and let the stems carry me outward. A daisy opened at the thick part of the curve, then a cluster of small blossoms that I drew a little too tight, then a fern-leaf like the ones I had seen pushing out of the cracks in the harbour wall. By dawn my hand ached and the paper had gone soft at the corners from my breath.

On the third sheet I drew a stem that would not end. It ran from the lower horn round the whole curve and came back to where it had started, so that the flowers seemed to feed on their own beginning. Theon's daughter looked over my shoulder and laughed, and said the moon would be pleased, since it had no garden of its own. Her father took the papers without looking at them and paid us in oil and bread.

I kept the third sheet, folded small, in the lining of my satchel. The soot has rubbed off the fold now, but the stem still runs unbroken round the edge, and some nights I trace it with my thumb until the lamp goes out.
