Crest with TARDIS and quote banner
Black and grey · Flash
A black and white drawing of a shield-style crest divided into panels. The panels contain a large letter H, the numbers 221B, a blue police box, a pentagram, a bird in flight and a Gothic-patterned section. A curled banner beneath reads Not all who wander are lost, and the linework is bold with solid white areas on a black ground.

Dear Ivo, the crest is finished, though Mrs Pargeter says the H looks like a gate and wants it repainted before the council inspects the frontage. I told her the gate is the point. You always said a good letter should be able to stand in a doorway.

The blue box came from the auction at Sandhaven, the one your uncle bought for a bet and never collected from the yard. It sits behind the chip shop now, and the paper boy swears it hums when the tide turns. I have put it in the lower left panel because nobody else would take it. The spiral is your idea, the one you drew on my wall in July, and the pentagram is for Mrs Pargeter's late husband, who would have hated it.
The banner I did last. I could not decide whether the quote was a comfort or a dare, so I left the lettering a shade uneven, the way you taught me, so that a person has to lean in to read it. Not all who wander are lost. I tested it on the shopfront at dusk and the letters went grey against the black board, which is when they look most like they mean it.
The shop bell went this morning. A man in a grey coat stood on the step with a map folded in quarters, asking for Baker Street. I told him the street was three towns south and that he had walked past it twice. He looked up at the crest for a long while, then at me, and said the H was in the wrong place. I have been thinking about that all day. Come home when you are tired of being lost, and bring the good brushes.
