You find the three things on the last Tuesday of October, wedged behind the lost-property shelves at Carrowmere Junction, where nobody has dusted since the signal box closed. A folded grey cloth, soft as breath. A cane of elder wood with a knot in its handle like a closed eye. And a ring of dull iron, thin as a wedding band that has given up on being one.

Mr Hollis, the clerk, has been waiting for you to notice them. He says the items were handed in by no one, which is how the railway describes most miracles. You turn the ring over, and the inside has words scratched into it in a hand that presses too hard: until the very end. He tells you the last person who asked about them was a woman with ink on her fingers, who bought a single ticket to nowhere and never came back for her change.

You lift the cloth and it weighs nothing at all. Outside, the 9.40 slides in with its lights blazing, and you notice the platform clock has stopped at a quarter to eleven, the exact minute you were always going to be standing here. You drape the cloth over your arm, slide the ring onto your smallest finger, and step through the gap in the barrier, leaving the cane leaning against the shelf for whoever comes looking next.
