Stacked symbols tattoo design

Black and grey · Flash

A vertical stack of five black symbols on a white background: a trident at the top, a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical bar, a circle containing a flame, a diamond-shaped knot, and a circle containing a bird silhouette with a crossed arrow at the base. The linework is bold and solid with no shading, and the design is centred and evenly spaced.

The brass stamp was still warm from the drawer when Mrs Ostler brought the box up from the quay and set it on my counter as if it might go off. Inside, wrapped in oilskin, lay five discs of black iron on a cord gone stiff with salt. A trident at the top, then a triangle holding a ring, a ring holding a flame, a knot shaped like a diamond, and at the foot a bird inside a circle with an arrow crossing its feet.

Her husband, Tobias, had worked the lobster boats out of the north pier for thirty years and never once said where the iron came from. He had lost two fingers to a winch and still wore the cord beneath his shirt. The harbour master claimed the trident was the mark the old pilots scratched on their hulls so the sea would know whose boat it was. I thought him a sentimental fool until I found the ledger under Tobias's bunk, its pages full of tide tables and, beside each date, one small symbol copied in pencil.

The last entry was the night of the February gale. Beside it he had drawn the flame ring and then crossed it out, and underneath, in a hand that had started to shake, he had written: Took the fire across. The bird went on ahead. Tell the girl the knot holds if you keep it tied.

The cord had been cut at the flame. Only four discs were in the box, and I sat for a long time looking at the frayed end. In the morning I threaded the rest back onto a fresh length of line and hung it on the hook by the shop door, the bird at the bottom turning slowly toward the water every time the wind came in off the pier.
