Cross stitch heart with MOM banner
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A cross stitch embroidery of a red heart with a white banner across its centre that reads MOM in black capitals. A white ribbon-like shape wraps behind the heart, and a small pink rose with green leaves sits at the lower right. The stitches are small and evenly worked on a dark navy background, giving the image a bold, flat outline.

In the hill kingdom of Carrow Dell, the weavers kept their needles in a tin shaped like a sheep. When the spring floods came down from the high pastures, Ida Mollan sat at the window of the mill with a bolt of navy linen across her knees and counted threads, because counting was the only thing that stopped her hands from shaking.

Her son Tam had gone over the bridge to the market town of Sennet to sell cloth, and the bridge had gone with the water. Word came by a drover with mud to his knees. He said the river had taken the cart but not the boy, that Tam was clinging to a willow in the flats and shouting for a rope. The rope was too short. The men of the dell tied three lengths together and waded out with lanterns swinging.
Ida did not wait for them. She took a skein of red wool, a scrap of white, and the finest needle in the mill, and by lamplight she stitched the only things she knew how to make hold: a heart, cross by cross, with a ribbon curling behind it and, across its middle, the three black capitals M, O and M. Every stitch was a small promise. She worked until the lamp guttered and the wick smoked on the sill.
At dawn Tam came up the lane with a broken oar and a face the colour of tallow. He saw the cloth pinned to the door before he saw his mother. He never asked what the letters said. He hung it above the hearth, where it stayed for forty years, and where the dell's children learned to read by tracing its edges with their fingers.
