Traditional heart banner reading MOM
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A traditional style flash design showing a red heart across a tan banner with the word MOM in bold black letters. A blue bird perches at the top left, with pink roses, green leaves and small yellow stars arranged around the heart. Bold black outlines define the shapes, which are filled with flat, solid colour on a plain off-white background.

Nana Ivy had sworn the bird would bring luck. She had tied a strip of tan ribbon to my left foot that morning, the same ribbon she once used to bind letters to her own mother, and sent me flying from the church roof to the marquee where the bride's mum waited beside the tiered cake. Roses wilted in the buttonholes as I passed. A boy with a sparkler waved his arms at the stars and shouted that I was a pigeon.
The bride's mother took the ring from my beak without a word, slid it onto a cord round her own neck, and dabbed her eyes with a napkin printed with a heart. Then she untied the ribbon from my foot and fixed it round my tail feathers in a bow the colour of old paper. 'Now you'll have to stay for the speeches,' she said.
I stayed. I have been staying ever since, perched on the marquee pole, fed on cake crumbs and fussed over by strangers who call me lucky. The organist is still not forgiven, but he plays a good deal better now.
