Heart banner with Mom and Dad

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A bold traditional-style flash design shows a red heart crossed by a yellow banner with the words MOM and DAD in black capitals. Dark green leaves sit behind the heart, with a red curl at the top right and a black scroll motif below and above. Thick black outlines and flat, solid fills in red, yellow and green give a classic colour flash look on a cream background.

You are up before the light, breaking the skin of ice on the water trough with the heel of a hammer, and the sound carries across the yard like a dropped spoon. The gate is furred white. Behind the barn the hens have gone quiet in their house, and the Land Rover sits where your father left it, its bonnet grey with frost, refusing to answer the key.

Your mother keeps the old tin on the dresser, the one with the faded Margate tram on its lid. Under the spare buttons and the bent keys are the flash sheets your father brought home from a parlour on the seafront forty years ago, when he was nineteen and certain of everything. Red hearts, green leaves, a banner with nothing written on it yet. He never had the ribbon inked. He said the words would be wrong until he knew which ones he meant.

You take the sheets to the cold kitchen and lay them beside the kettle. The yellow has faded to the colour of weak tea. You trace the banner with one finger, then the black scroll above it, then the curl of leaves. When your mother comes down in her dressing gown she finds you holding a pencil over the blank ribbon, and she does not ask what you mean to write. She takes the pencil, leans over the table, and writes in capitals that slope slightly to the left.

Outside, the sun clears the hedge and finds the trough. The ice you broke has begun to close, but the water at its edge shows rust-red where the old bucket has stained the rim, and the light catches it so that the hole looks, for a moment, like something you could carry in out of the cold and keep.
