LOVE letters with cherry blossom design
Japanese · Mixed · Flash
The word LOVE is spelt in block serif capitals, each letter filled with a design of pink cherry blossoms and falling petals. The grey shading behind the flowers is rendered in swirling, cloud-like bands with smooth gradients. The letters sit centred on a plain light grey background with a soft shadow.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The sign-painter came up Sallow Lane in March with a tin of lead paint, a box of brushes and a folding stool, and the miller's wife met him at the gate with her arms folded. "Four letters," she said. "Not three, not five. And mind the cherry tree, it drops on everything."

He asked her what the four letters were. She told him, and he laughed, because it was the one word nobody in that valley ever said aloud. So he painted it in block capitals as tall as a man, then filled each letter with grey bands that swirled like a weather front, slate and pearl, until the boards looked like the sky over the weir. Into that sky he painted blossom, pink as a fingernail, five petals to a flower, and where a petal had come loose he painted it falling.
He worked three days. On the fourth the wind came round from the east and the cherry shed its whole crop at once, and the lane turned white. The miller's wife came out with a broom and stood looking at the gate. The petals had landed on the wet paint and stuck fast, and she did not sweep them.
When he came back the next spring the word was still there, weathered but whole, with pale petals pressed into the grey like flowers in a book. Nobody in the valley could say whether the word or the petals had been painted first, and the miller's wife, who had the last word on most things, never said.
