Crossed arrows on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arrows cross diagonally over the forearm, each with a hatched fletching and an open triangular head. The linework is solid black and the shaft crossing is softened with stippled dots that fade outwards. The ink is black and grey on bare skin, shown against a plain light background with the photo cropped close to the arm.

The lift at Harrow Point had been broken since the spring, so Mrs Adaeze Pell sent her messages the old way. She tied a note to the shaft of an arrow, drew her bow on the balcony of flat 41, and loosed it across the courtyard towards flat 38, where Tomas Greaves kept his bees and his bad temper. The fletching came from a pigeon's wing she had found on the stairwell. The heads were cut from a tin of peaches.

Each morning an arrow went over, and each evening one came back. Nobody on the estate could say when the notes turned into quarrels, only that the arrows began to cross in the air above the middle of the courtyard and drop into the same patch of grass. The sparrows learned to feed there. The children learned to stand back from it. The caretaker said the lawn would die under all that iron, but it grew thicker every year, a darker green than anywhere else on the estate.
In October the council sent a man to mend the lift. He came up the stairs with his toolbox and found, on the landing between the ninth and tenth floors, two arrows lying crossed where they had fallen from the rail. He read both notes standing there. The first said the bees had swarmed onto the washing line. The second said she was not coming down for a swarm, and that he could come up and get his bees himself.
He did not mend the lift that day. He sat on the step with the arrows across his knees, and by the time the light had gone from the stairwell, he had heard two bowstrings from the balconies above, and the arrows came down together in the grass.
