Geometric fox on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fox is drawn in black lines made of angular, interlocking triangles and polygons, running along the outer forearm. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the open panels of skin inside the shapes are left unfilled. The ink is black only, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a dark leather surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Fourth morning the fox has come through the yard gate before the lamps are lit, and I have stopped pretending I didn't see it. Mrs Okonedo's bread-lorry driver swears it is a dog. It is not a dog. It moves like something folded from a single sheet of card, all angles and sharp corners, and where the light from the oven door catches its flank the outline holds still in the dark as though someone has drawn it on the air with a steady hand.

I have been scoring loaves for nineteen years. You learn that a blade wants one clean stroke, and that every line you cut into dough has to go somewhere, or the crust splits where it pleases. The fox does not seem to mind lines. It crosses the yard by way of the drain, the coal chute and the corner of the stacked flour sacks, each step a new facet, and it never once touches the open panels between them, the patches of dark that are only yard.

Yesterday I left the back door propped and a tray of seeded cobs on the step to cool. This morning the tray was empty and the cobs had been set out in a row along the wall, each one turned so its scored side faced the sky, the way Father used to lay out his trial loaves for inspection. I have decided this is an insult. I have also decided I will leave the tray again tomorrow, and I will sit at the window with the lamp off to see how it manages the turn.
