Geometric feather inside a diamond outline on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a feather built from angular facets and fine lines, with stippled dotwork shading along one side of each segment. It sits inside a large diamond outline, with a dotted inner outline set slightly offset from the solid border. The work is in black ink only, photographed on a bare upper arm against a white textured wall and dark clothing.

The cage at Hollin Drift drops and rises with a sound like a cart on cobbles, and you count the men as they step off it into the lamplight. Thirty-one before the shift, thirty-one again at the bell. Your brother Tom is always last, bait tin knocking his hip and a goose quill tucked behind one ear. He says it keeps the dark from sticking to him. You tell him a quill weighs nothing and the dark has never once cared what he thinks of it.

At home, under the oil lamp, he teaches you to draw the way old Mr Pell taught him, from the patterns scratched into the pony stalls in the chapel. You rule a long diamond on the back of the coal ledger, then a second one a finger's width inside it, set just off true so the lines never quite meet. Inside, the feather rises in facets like cut glass, each piece hatched with the thin lines of a seam. Along one side of every piece you stipple dots with the nib until the shadow looks like soot that has settled and stayed. Tom says a feather is only a thing made to carry air. You say it is a thing that sits in a box and waits.

The Saturday the east face roof comes down, the cage stops for three hours and the whole village stands at the winding-house door. You hold your slate against your chest and do not sit. When the cage finally rises, Tom steps out with the quill gone from his ear and his fist closed tight. He opens it slowly. A sliver of black stone sits in his palm, cut clean, taking the lamplight in a single point. The lad who found it swears it is a diamond. The foreman says it is only coal that has been squeezed so long it forgot how to be anything else.

Later, you open the ledger to the drawing and press the stone into the centre of the feather, where the dots are thickest. It fits as though the page was ruled around it. Tom looks at it for a long while, then laughs, and the grey dust slides off his shoulders like the stippling you made, leaving the lines clean underneath.
