Crossed lavender sprigs on an arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of two lavender sprigs crossed in an X, each with a slender stem and a feathery cluster of buds at one end. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design sits near the centre of the frame against plain, lightly freckled skin, with a teal background and white fabric at the edges.

Ada had been cutting lavender from the chapel wall since the spring the Hartley seam flooded, and by August the bunches hung upside down from the scullery rafters like a row of small grey-blue lamps. Her mother said it kept the moths out of the good tablecloths. Ada said nothing, because it was the only thing in the house that smelled of anywhere else.

On the first Monday of every month she walked two bundles up the lane to the pithead gate, tied with the same red wool her father had once used on his lamp cord. The cage men took them without looking. Nobody in Ashby Row had ever asked what they were for, and she had never said, though she knew the older women thought it was a chapel thing, or a widow's thing, or both.

In November the night shift came up short. Ada stood at the gate in the dark while the cage rattled and the lamps came through the mist one by one, and she counted them under her breath. Eleven. Then twelve. She had crossed the two stems in her hands without deciding to, the way you cross your fingers, and when Tommy Rudd stepped off the cage with his face black to the ears she pressed the crossed sprigs into his palm. He laughed at her, hoarse and alive, and the lavender smell rose sharp between them in the cold.
