The fair came to Hollin Bottom the week the frost broke, and the man who ran the coconut shy had a pair of antlers nailed above his caravan door. Nobody in the village thought this strange. They had seen a stag at the edge of the birch wood all winter, standing thin and patient, and they knew he was no hunter's beast.

Mavis Crane, who kept the bakehouse, took a basket of seed buns down to the field on the Sunday and found the showman on an upturned crate, stitching a red rose onto a scrap of green velvet. He did not look up. "You'll want to know my price," he said. "Nothing. Only the one thing." He told her the stag had asked for a fair that never left. Any girl who won a ring on the wheel would find a rose on her doorstep by morning, and every rose wanted a name written on its petal.

Mavis laughed and said she had no sweetheart to name. Then she won a ring on the third spin, and when she woke the rose was waiting on her step, dew still on the stem. The petal bore a name she did not know. Her own hand had written it in the night, in ink she had never owned.

She went back to the field before the fair struck its tents. The antlers above the caravan door had grown a crown of roses at their base, and the stag stood in the mist behind the showman, watching her with the patience of something that had waited a long time to be asked. Mavis took the rose from her step, folded it into her apron, and walked home with the bread.
