Crouched figure in a realism piece on the shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A crouched, dark figure leans forward across the upper arm and shoulder, with a long diagonal shape and chain-like lines at the right edge. Behind the figure, soft blurred bright spots and a hazy grey background suggest lights and depth. The shading is smooth and photographic, with strong contrast between the dark figure and the lighter background.

Your sister Dee has asked you to give a speech at her wedding on Saturday. You told her you would rather throw the hammer again in front of two thousand people. She laughed and said that was the same thing, only with better tablecloths.
The last throw of that evening went out to sixty-one metres and a bit, the best of your life, and you felt it leave your hands before you saw it. The judge's flag came up. Nobody cheered for a while, then everybody did, and your legs gave out on the wet grass so you sat there with the chain coiled in your lap like a rope you had hauled up out of deep water.
So on Saturday you will stand up with a glass in one hand and say that a good throw is mostly patience, and that Dee has been turning on her own axis for years, faster every time, until somebody finally stepped in to take the weight. Then you will sit down before anyone can ask what you meant.
