Colour tattoo of a grey crown with coral flowers and dark leaves on the upper arm, in a botanical style.

Crown and coral flowers on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A grey and black crown sits in the centre of the design, with coral-red daisy-like flowers and dark leaves on either side. The crown uses shaded grey linework, while the flowers have softer red fills and darker outlines. The tattoo is shown on the outer upper arm against a dark top, with the shoulder and a pearl necklace visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Win,

The big top came down on Tuesday in Thetford, and nobody cried except Mr Ruddock, who wept into the sawdust bucket and then blamed the dust. You will want to know about the crown. Mrs Pemberton had it made in 1952 for the Queen of the Hoop, a tin thing with four arches, and every spring old Ruddock repainted it grey so the lamps would catch the rivets. The red daisies were his idea. The only red left in the paint tin was coral, so the flowers came out coral, and nobody had the heart to tell him they looked like cheap sweets.

Last Saturday the Queen of the Hoop was Bet, nineteen, who had learned to spin the hoop from her mother and could do it blindfold on a good night. Three hundred people came to watch her send it round and round over a field of mud. Afterwards the Pembertons sat in the caravan doing sums that would not come out, and the crown lay on the table between the teapot and the ledger.

Here is what I did, and I am not sorry. I carried it down to Aldous at the pawnshop on Eastgate Street. He weighed it on his brass scale, tutted at the daisies, and offered me eleven pounds. I asked for twenty. He gave me fourteen and a tin of pear drops.

I am writing from the bus station. The crown is in his window now, between a wireless and a violin, with its little cross pointing at the market cross across the road. I thought you should know where it is. Come and see it before the Christmas crowds take it.

Love, Edie
