Crown tattoo on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed crown sits centred on the upper back, with a cross-topped centre arch, beaded edging and scrolled motifs. Fine shading gives the crown a raised, sculpted look against the skin. Two hands with glossy pink nails rest on the shoulders at the top of the frame, and a small mark is visible on one hand.

The crown had to be finished before the bells of St Ossian's rang for the new Lady of the Saltmarsh, and Tamsin Greave still had forty beads to set by hand. The widow who had commissioned it wanted silver that would hold its shape in a gale, so Tamsin had hammered the band from a single ingot and left the shoulders thick. Her father had taught her that a crown should look heavy before anyone lifts it. He had also taught her to hide things in plain sight.

She worked the scrolls first, rolling each leaf under a loupe until its edges curled out from the metal like frost on a window. Then she took her graver to the shading, cutting tiny hatched lines into the hollows so the whole thing seemed to rise off the flat of the band. The centre arch needed its cross, and the prior had asked for it tall and plain. Tamsin gave him tall. She gave it plain only at the front.
On the reverse, beneath the lowest scroll, she punched eleven names no bigger than barley grains: the boatmen the Saltmarsh had lost to the spring tide, the ones the widow had never once spoken aloud. Nobody would look there except the person who wore it, and nobody would think to look for such a thing in a crown of that weight.
On the morning of the coronation the bells rang and the widow bent her neck under the silver, then straightened it. Tamsin watched from the back pew as the cross threw its shadow across the chapel wall, a thin black mast against the whitewash, and she counted the names under her breath until the last bell stopped.
