A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Idris Pugh had brought the crown in wrapped in a tea towel, and Albert Lowe unwrapped it on the counter under the lamp the way he unwrapped everything, slowly, as if it might object. "It was my mother's," she said. "She wore it at the street party in fifty-three and wouldn't take it off until the bunting came down. Then it went in the drawer and never came out. I want it made proper again." Albert turned it over. Someone had scratched initials inside the band, E.R., and beneath them a smaller set, B.J., which he decided not to ask about.

He spent three evenings on it with a fine file and a jeweller's loupe, filling the broken point with solder no thicker than a hair, then blackening the outline with a nib so the lines stood bold again. He left the band half polished on purpose. Shading the worn part would have been lying.

When she came back on Friday she didn't cry, which he'd half expected. She looked at it a long while, then slid two pound coins across the glass. "Keep the change," she said, and tapped the clasp of her handbag twice before putting the crown inside. Albert wrapped the empty tea towel back over the counter out of habit, and found he could not make himself throw it away.
