Crown and pink diamonds on a foot

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A grey and black shaded crown with jewelled details sits at the centre of the design, with a large faceted pink diamond below it. Smaller pink and purple diamonds scatter around the crown, some with highlights and some with bold black outlines. The crown is rendered in greyscale while the diamonds carry most of the colour, set against smooth pale skin and a dark leather background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy had set the crown on the counter as if it were a tea tray, and Nell, who had worked the pawn desk at Saltcombe for six years, knew better than to touch it before the ledger was open. Grey iron, heavy as a sad joke, with little beads of purple glass stuck along the rim where the silver had worn away. "It was my mother's," the old woman said. "Her father's before that. It's worth nothing, I know."

Nell lifted it with both hands and something rattled inside the band. A stone dropped onto the blotter, pink as a boiled sweet, then another, and then four more skittered off the edge and under the radiator. By the time she had crawled after them on the cold lino, the crown had emptied itself of every gem it had ever held, and the diamonds were rolling in the draught from the door, catching the light off the sea as though they had been waiting a century to be let out.

Mrs Abernethy did not gasp. She counted them with a wet finger, sweeping them into a saucer. "Eleven," she said. "Mother always said there were twelve."

Nell wrote the ticket. Pawned: one crown, iron, incomplete. She found the twelfth stone wedged in the coal scuttle, pressed it into the old woman's palm and closed her fingers over it. Outside, the tide was coming in over the groynes, and nobody in Saltcombe would ever know which of them had been the thief.
