Crown and quote tattoo down the shin
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical column of black capital letters reads YOU ARE WHAT YOU LOVE NOT WHO LOVES YOU, with a small crown motif above the text and a matching crown-like symbol below it. The letters are bold, evenly spaced and solid black, with no shading or colour. The leg is photographed outdoors against green trees, with polka dot shoes and a paved path in the foreground.

The letter arrived on a Tuesday, pinned under the cafe sugar jar, and Mara read it twice before she let herself believe the handwriting was Tomas's. He had always written his capitals like fence posts, every line straight up and down, as if the page might blow away if he let a word lean.

She took the bus to the coast that weekend with the letter folded in her coat. The guesthouse on the front smelled of wet rope and fried bread, and the landlady, a woman called Irene with a cardigan full of biscuit crumbs, gave her the room over the harbour without asking why she had come alone. Mara spent the afternoon walking the pier and reading the same line on the back of a receipt she had been using as a bookmark: you are what you love, not who loves you. It was his line. He had said it to her the night before he left for the oil rigs, half joking, and she had laughed and told him it sounded like something painted on a mug.
On Sunday she found him. Not in person, but in the dim back room of a chandlery where a man sat on a stool beside a window of cracked glass, waiting for customers who never came. Tomas had made the letter on his lunch break. She could tell from the thumbprint of grease in the margin. He had gone back to the rigs with a bag of clean socks and a new sense of what mattered, and he had never once asked her to choose between him and the sea.
She walked back along the front with the wind pushing at her coat. Mara pinned the receipt to the guesthouse noticeboard, beneath a faded advert for boat trips, and left it for whoever came next to read.
