The band was halfway through the quickstep when Ruth pulled me into the cloakroom and held out her left wrist, already chalked with the faint pencil outline of the letters. Arthur Pike did the work in the boiler room behind the pier, where he had once tattooed sailors and now did dancers for a shilling and a bottle of stout. He held her hand flat on his knee and talked about the tide tables while the needle went in, so she wouldn't have to think about the sting. Ruth had told the committee her father was an agent at Lloyd's in Bombay. It was the first of several lies, and I had carried most of them for her all summer, folding her letters into my coat pocket so her landlady wouldn't see the postmarks.

"No lies," she said, when Arthur wiped the blood and ink away and it was her turn to decide. I tipped my own wrist towards the bare bulb and said, "Just love," and Arthur, who had heard everything in that room, did mine without a word.

The next Saturday the floor was packed, and when the band struck up the last waltz Ruth took my hand and turned me under her arm. Our wrists crossed in the lamplight, and for one slow circuit of the hall the two phrases read as a single sentence, the way they were meant to, before she let go and walked out into the rain.
