Crown tattoo on the hip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a bare midriff showing a solid black crown tattoo with some grey shading on the hip, just above the waistband of leopard print underwear. A navel piercing sits above the tattoo and a teal top is visible at the upper edge of the frame. The lighting is warm and slightly grainy, with the tattoo as the main focal point.

Dear Mags,

You will not believe what Mr Okafor's nephew brought into the shop on Tuesday, wrapped in a tea towel and smelling of chip fat. A tin crown, the sort they sell on the pier for a fiver, painted gold, with one point snapped off and a crust of salt on the lacquer. He wanted eleven pounds. I told him it was worth four, and he told me it had sat on the head of the Queen of the Mackerel Fleet at the regatta in 1987, which is the kind of lie a boy tells when he has been out all night. I bought it anyway.

Here is the strange part. There is a hallmark stamped inside the band, a little anchor and the letters H.M., and when I held it under the lamp I saw that someone had scratched a name beneath the paint: Dilys. Not a name I know. I asked old Pritchard at the chandlery and he went quiet, then said the fleet used to crown a girl each August, and she kept the crown until she married a man from inland, and after that it went up into the attic of whichever house she lived in. Nobody ever asked for it back.

I have set it in the window between the brass compass and the bundle of cormorant feathers that nobody buys. Yesterday a woman in a leopard-print coat stopped outside, looked at it for a long time, and walked on without coming in. This morning I found a pound coin on the sill and a note under it in pencil: Keep it. It was never mine to wear.

I think I shall keep it too. Come down at the weekend. We will have the wind, the chips, and I will show you the scratch on the band under a proper light.

Love, Ros
