Two keys on the abdomen and a starfruit on the forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The photograph shows a bare midriff with two key designs on the lower abdomen: a black and grey key on the left with solid shading and a detailed bit, and a key on the right with a lighter, partly coloured head and fine outlines. On the right forearm, a bright yellow starfruit with green leaf details is shown in a bold, coloured style. The framing is close and slightly angled against a patterned fabric backdrop, with the face not visible.

The trowel rang against something that was not a stone, and Hester knelt in the damp bed beside the glasshouse to brush the soil away with her fingers. Two keys lay side by side, green with age. One had a bow shaped like a crown and a bit cut into a lattice like a garden gate. The other had a bow like a broken sun. Neither had been there when the walls were rebuilt in her grandmother's time, and she had tried them on every lock on the estate over the years without luck.

She carried them into the glasshouse, where the starfruit tree Tobias had grafted before his knees gave out stood in a clay pot by the paraffin heater. Its fruit hung yellow and heavy. Tobias used to say the tree only gave fruit to people who kept their promises, and Hester had never been sure whether he was joking. She tried the sun-headed key on the iron cupboard under the potting bench. It turned with a sound like a sigh, and inside lay a seed ledger tied with garden twine and a folded note in Tobias's square capitals: KEEP THE GATE OPEN FOR WHOEVER COMES LOOKING. PICK WHEN THE STARS TURN GOLD.
She read it twice, then took the fruit from the branch and sliced it across the middle. Five points, pale and clean, the star he had always promised her. She laid one slice on the windowsill beside the keys and left the rest on the bench for the robins. Outside, the garden gate creaked on its hinges, and she went to unlatch it.
