Crowned praying figure flash design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A bold drawing of a crowned, robed figure with hands pressed together in prayer, set in front of a pink and yellow flower-like halo. Thick black outlines, flat fills and dotted detailing define the shapes, with red, pink, blue and green used across the robe, flowers and leaves. The figure is centred on a peach-orange background, with leaves and stems filling the lower corners.

Dear Tom,

The big top went up at Wendover on Tuesday and the wind has not let up since, so I am writing this on the back of a ticket roll with the lamp turned low. Mr Ferris wants the fortune booth front finished before the Saturday crowds. He asked for a lady with a crown, one who looks as if she has just been told good news and is too proud to say so. I told him I would paint her the old way, black outlines thick as pencil, fills flat as a dinner plate.
I have her now. Her robe is the blue of a jay's wing, her bodice a red you could see from the road, and behind her a halo of pink petals opens like a fan someone has unfolded slowly. Her hands are pressed together at the chin. I did those last, because they took three evenings. The fingers kept wanting to look as if they were holding something, and I kept telling them they were holding nothing at all.
Ferris came round after supper and stood at the foot of the ladder with his pipe gone out. He asked why she had no proper face, only the little dotted marks. I said the face belongs to whoever sits in the booth. He laughed and said that was the most expensive thing I had ever told him, and then he paid me the extra shilling anyway.
Keep the leaves coming up the sides for me, Tom. I will be home for your birthday if the frost holds off.
Nell
