Robed skeleton figure with marigolds
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A skeletal figure stands centred in a red gown and teal-green cloak, with hands pressed together at the chest. A golden halo of radiating lines surrounds the head, and a night sky of small stars fills the dark background. Marigolds sit at the base beside a small skull within an ornate dark border with a striped edge.

Dolores Vance had not planned to stop at the candle stall by the school gates, but the reunion hall would not open its doors for another hour, and the woman behind the trestle was already lighting wicks against the wind. Every candle carried the same figure on its glass: a tall lady in a red gown, a teal cloak scattered with stars, her bony hands folded as if she were about to ask for something quietly.

'She keeps the late ones,' the woman said, without being asked. 'People who never got to say goodbye properly.' Dolores thought of Ruth Pell, who had sat behind her in Year Nine and then vanished from the group chat after a fire at her mum's flat. She had meant to ask after her tonight. Among the name cards on the hall table she had already spotted one in Ruth's looping hand, though no Ruth had come through the door yet.
She bought a green candle, small enough for her coat pocket, and a fistful of marigolds whose orange heads smelled sharp and earthy. Inside, the caretaker had strung paper lanterns from the basketball hoops, and someone had filled bowls with crisps shaped like little boats. Dolores found Mr Haskins, their old form tutor, pinning badges to lapels, and asked him carefully whether anyone had heard from Ruth.
He didn't look up. 'She runs the stall by the bus station on Sundays,' he said. 'The one with the marigolds.' Dolores set the candle on the table beside the raffle tickets and lit it with a borrowed lighter, and the noise of the room softened around the small gold flame. When the door opened behind her, she did not turn straight away. She already knew the laugh.
