Crowned veiled figure with hearts and beads
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A crowned figure with a veil and stylised flourishes sits at the centre, with a heart at the chest and a cross and smaller hearts hanging from strings of dotted beads below. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with simple shading only in the solid fills. The design fills a vertical area of skin against a plain light background with a red object at the top right.

Dear Mariana,

They took the lantern off me at the checkpoint, but not the cloth. The officer unfolded Mama's veil on the steel table and held it to the light the way you would hold a wet letter, his thumb moving over the old lace where the little crown was stitched. He asked what she was. I told him she was a woman who had lost three sons to the river and sewed a bead for each of them, and he laughed and asked whether I had a receipt for grief. I did not. I had only the strings of beads, dotted all the way down the hem, and the small silver cross still hanging from the last one.
He kept me waiting while a dog sniffed the tyres of the lorry in front. I counted the hearts on the veil instead of looking at his face. There is one over her chest, drawn so plainly you could mistake it for a cup, and two more dangling from the strings like fruit nobody has picked yet. Papa said the hearts were for the sons and the cross was for the one who came back, though he never explained which one that was, and Mama only ever said to mind the beads.
When he finally folded the veil and pushed it back across the table, his hand stayed on it a moment too long. Then he nodded at the far gate and told me to go on before the light changed. I did not thank him. I just tied the cross to my wrist and walked across with the crown pressed flat against my ribs, the way she carried it to church.
Write soon. Tell Tomas the boat is still in the shed.
