The dress form had stood in the back room of the Quay Street shop since before my mother was born, its wooden neck cracked and mended with fishing twine. Every winter the gales tore scraps of old trawl net off the drying lines and left them caught in the harbour wall, and every winter Aunt Morag picked them out and put them in a biscuit tin without a word.

The summer I turned sixteen I decided to make a gown from that net. I unpicked the mesh, knotted it into rounded rosettes no bigger than a thumbnail, and pinned them over the form in a lattice that never quite repeated. Morag watched from the doorway with her pipe unlit. "Lace takes the weather," she said. "Mind the hem. It wants to walk."

When it was finished, the form stood under the bare bulb on its iron foot, and at night the knots threw shadows across the floorboards like a second dress lying underneath the first. The ferry came in on Thursdays. The Thursday after the gown was done, a man off the boat stopped in the doorway, looked at those shadows for a long time, and asked who had made the thing that held the lace up.

I said it was only a frame. He nodded as though he had heard that answer before, and went back down the quay with the light still in the knots behind him.
