Seated pug and heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a seated pug, shown facing forward with its head tilted slightly, sits on the inner wrist. A simple outlined heart floats above the dog's head, and a thin horizontal line marks the ground beneath its paws. The linework is fine and the body is lightly shaded in grey, set against plain skin and a dark, glossy background.

Mags Pritchard had been ship's cook on the coaster Lady Ottilie for eleven years and had never once been told what to feed a dog. The pug arrived at Immingham tied to a bollard with a length of bailer twine and a note that said only, Sorry, Captain. On Tuesday he ate the bacon rind, on Wednesday he chewed the cook's clog, and by Thursday he had learned the one trick that mattered, which was to sit at the galley door with his round head tilted until somebody gave in.

Nobody gave in faster than Mags. She called him Sprat because he was small and stubborn and vanished into the hold whenever the swell came up. Each night she set a tin plate on the deck exactly where the lino met the steel, and each morning the plate was clean and the dog was sitting on the far side of the line she had scratched there with a bread knife, as if he had measured it himself.
In November the Ottilie ran into a North Sea gale off Flamborough and the galley swung like a bucket on a rope. Mags held the rail with one hand and the pot with the other, and when she finally looked down, the dog was sitting square on his scratched line, paws tucked, ears flat, watching her with such plain devotion that she laughed out loud over the crash of crockery.
Later, when the sea had gone flat and grey, she drew a small heart on the steamed porthole with one finger, and Sprat thumped his tail once against the deck, as though that settled the matter between them for good.
