Crystal ball and roses on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A crystal ball sits on an orange ornate stand, with pink roses, buds, green leaves and a falling petal wrapped around it. The sphere is shaded in soft pinks, blues and greys with a dark crescent at its base, and the roses and stand have bold black outlines. Bright pinks, oranges and greens dominate the composition, which runs diagonally up the forearm.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming sideways across the Saturday market since seven, and Mr Okonedo has given up on his awning, so I am writing this under the tarpaulin of the sweet stall with the wax paper going soft on my knee. You will not believe it, but the crystal ball has sold. Not to a man in a good coat, and not to anyone who looked like they had a fortune to be told. A girl of about sixteen bought it with a fistful of coppers and a bus pass she said she would fetch later, and she carried it off under her jumper like a stray kitten.
She held it up to the lamp on the corner before she paid, and the pink and grey clouds inside it turned slowly, like something breathing in its sleep. I asked her if it showed the future. She said she only wanted to see what it looked like when the light went through it. Mr Okonedo told her it shows the weather, which is the same thing in Hull. She laughed and went off into the wet with the orange stand tucked under her arm, and the roses in the tin bucket shivered and dropped another petal on the cobbles.
I picked that petal up and put it in my pocket. It is pink as a cough sweet and it has already stuck to my lining. When the crowd thinned I looked into the place where the ball had been, and the empty stand threw a little shadow on the stall cloth. It was the shape of a crescent, like a bite out of a moon.
I have put the last rose in a jam jar on the counter. Come up on Saturday if the trains run and bring a carrier bag for the petals. Love, Jo
