Perfume bottle with flowers on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A perfume bottle with a glittering purple and peach glass body and a rubber atomiser bulb, surrounded by small sparkles and cloud shapes. Pink and orange flowers with green leaves sit at the lower right of the bottle. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with soft shading and white highlights on the glass.

Nobody in Margate bought Midnight Orchard that summer, so Mr Haskins ordered four gross of the stuff from a supplier in Bristol out of pure optimism, and they sat in the back room under a sheet of brown paper until the glitter in the bottles had settled into the peach and violet swirl the label promised. I was seventeen and paid to dust them.

The atomiser bulb was the trouble. Green rubber, the sort that squeaks when you press it, and every one of them split by August in the heat that came off the sea wall. Mr Haskins said the bulbs were the best thing about the bottle, and that a scent you could not spray was just a paperweight with ideas. So I sat on the stockroom step with a tin of pins and a pot of paste, fixing bulbs for a penny each, and listening to the fairground organ bleed through the back door.

A woman came in on the last Saturday of the season, asking for something that would make a flat smell like a garden at night. I gave her the last bottle, the one with the bulb I had mended twice. She sprayed the air once, closed her eyes, and said it smelled of somewhere she had never been, which I took as a compliment. She paid in coppers and left the shop door swinging.

Years later I still have the tin. The pins have rusted together and the paste has gone hard as toffee. When the window is open and the wind comes off the front, I press one bulb just to hear it sigh, and for a moment the back room smells of violets and gunpowder and somewhere far off the sea.
