Crystal lotus with crescent moon
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A stylised lotus flower with faceted, crystal-like petals is drawn in bold pink outlines, with a crescent moon behind it. The petals are filled with soft pink, lilac and pale yellow washes, with fine facet lines suggesting gemstone planes. The flower sits centrally on a plain white background, with the moon rising above its top petals.

The third tank had cracked again, so I was up to my elbows in cold brine when the inspector's shuttle came in low over Carrow Ridge. Mother always said the lotuses knew when company was coming, and they did seem to sulk. Their petals went dull as wet slate and refused to hum. I'd been growing them for nine seasons in the old reservoir under Hale Station, feeding them salt and patience, and I still could not tell you how the facets set. They simply came, one plane at a time, like someone cutting a gem from the inside out.

The inspector wanted the big bloom from tank two, the one shaped like a fist of rose quartz, for the Verdant Court market. He carried a ledger and wore a pale grey coat, and he kept calling the crystal a product. I told him it wasn't ready. He told me the crescent over the ridge had been waxing for a month and every seller on the loop wanted something to pin to it. I said the moon had nothing to do with petals. He laughed at me the way people laugh at a child who has just said something true.
When he had gone I stood at the viewport with my hands still wrinkled from the brine. The bloom in tank two had opened a single petal while we argued, lilac at its base and pale gold at the tip, edged in a line of pink fire that caught the moon's thin light. I left it there. Nobody on Hale would buy a flower that refused to be cut, and that suited me fine.
