Fairy with wings line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single-outline drawing of a fairy figure with a bun, flowing hair and two large, pointed wings. The linework is bold and sweeping, with thick and thin strokes and little shading. The design is drawn in black on white with no colour and sits centred on the page.

You find the fairy on the back of the seating plan, two hours before the vicar arrives. Someone has drawn her in biro, a bun piled high, wings swept back like a hand reaching for a door. Your sister says it is the bride's doing, a joke about the reception being at the bottom of a wood. You fold the card into your pocket because the table numbers are still wrong and the marquee smells of wet grass.

The bride, Marnie Oakes, is in the potting shed arguing with her mother about lilies. Nobody admits to drawing the fairy. The caterer swears it wasn't him, and the string quartet is tuning in the lane. You keep looking for the pen. At four o'clock you find it wedged behind a jam jar of sweet peas, its cap chewed flat, as if whoever held it had been thinking very hard.
When the speeches start, the wind turns. The marquee sides lift on a breath that smells of rain and hawthorn, and every head swings towards the open flap. There is nothing there but a moth circling the lamp, yet the tablecloths settle with a soft sound, like wings folding. Your sister catches your eye and neither of you says a word.
Later, when the lanterns are out and you are sweeping confetti off the boards, you find a single curved line of ink on the dance floor, wet and fresh, sweeping up from the floorboards like a wing caught mid-beat. The card is still in your pocket. You leave the line where it is, and the bride dances over it until dawn.
