Crystal outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a crystal cluster with angular facets sits on the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading or fill. The wrist and hand are visible at the lower edge against a red wrap and a white top, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The cloud came down on the third day out of Seydisfjordur, thick as wet wool, and the sun was somewhere behind it. You stood at the binnacle with the crystal cupped in your palm, the one the old mate pressed on you on the Grimsby quay with orders not to lose it. Its edges were sharp enough to nick a thumb. Held over the chart, every pencilled line doubled into two faint wakes of the same coast.

Ruth at the wheel asked what you were doing, and you told her to keep the bow on the north-west swell and say nothing. You had read about this in a water-stained book bought for a shilling from a stall in Leith: daylight scattered by the sky carries a pattern, and a stone that splits light in two lets you see which half burns brightest. Turn it slowly and the sky shows you where the sun is hiding. Your fingers had gone white with cold. The watch on deck observed you the way crews observe a fool who might turn out to be right.
Twice you turned the stone and got nothing but grey. The third time a seam of brightness opened above the horizon, and you pinned it with the dividers, marked the bearing on the slate, and felt the whole ship lean with the correction. Ruth said nothing for a long moment. Then she laughed, short and surprised, and the sun slid through the cloud like a coin dropped on a table.
That night you wrapped the crystal in a red wool scarf and left it on the chart table, facets down, so the next watch would have to turn it over to read the bearing you had written beneath it.
