Mandala band tattoo on the wrist
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A half-mandala design in black ink wraps around the inner wrist, built from concentric rings, petal-like scallops and small dots at the top. The linework is crisp and the dense stippling creates soft tonal shading within the shapes. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a dark sleeve and a cobbled street.

The rings on the cistern lid were my grandfather's work, not the mason's. He scratched them with a bent nail and a length of tarred string pinned at the centre, and he never let anyone else hold the free end. The summer I turned nine the boats were coming in late and the wind kept snapping the string taut, so he finally handed it to me. 'Keep it tight,' he said, 'or the circle goes soft.'

We drew until the light turned orange over the harbour. He pressed a dot wherever a boat rounded the breakwater, so the little dots along the top of the pattern are our fleet, counted home. The string only reached halfway from the lid's edge, and he said a proper pattern never closes on itself, because the sea is always coming back to finish it.
He died in February. I was seventeen and selling fish on the quay, and it was my aunt who noticed I had taken to drawing the same half-ring on the back of every receipt, pressing dots along the top with a biro until the paper tore. She did not say anything. She only fetched the nail from the biscuit tin and set it in my palm.
The string is gone now, but I keep a loop of it in my bag. When the boats come round the breakwater I press a dot onto my skin with the nail's point, one for each hull, and I leave the last part of the curve bare, because that is where he always stopped.
